5 Tips: Child Interviews
“What if my child does not perform well?”
“What if my child has a tantrum in the middle of an interview?”
“What if my child gets a question wrong?”
Sound familiar?
We know this part of the process can feel overwhelming and out of your control. We’ve heard all of the “What Ifs,” and let’s face it, children can be unpredictable; we’re here to help ease your nerves, manage your expectations, and offer you some sound advice with these 5 tips.
1. When to Schedule
Schedule your child’s interviews at their optimal time of day. You know your child best, so be cognizant about what time of day they are typically in their best spirits. Some children perform better in the morning, others after a day of school. Keep this in mind when scheduling.
2. When to Introduce
Try not to tell your child too far out about the interview, as the anticipation can cause nervousness and other big feelings. Find natural opportunities to tell your child about the “exciting visit” they have! We advise letting your child know the week of.
3. How to Explain
When you discuss the interview, tell your child that they are going to visit a new school, where there will be nice teachers and friends waiting to meet them with fun activities. The goal is to create calm energy around the interview; we never want them to think this is a high stakes event.
4. How to Prepare
Take your child on a walk around the building they will be visiting; this way their interview will not be the first time they are seeing the school or taking a new route. If time doesn’t permit, show them pictures of the school.
5. How to Dress
We know it is tempting to dress your EarlyBird up in their finest clothing; but we suggest sticking to comfortable shoes and clothing that will not pose any distractions. Refrain from dressing them in anything new, limit the accessories, and feel free to have them pick out their outfit for the day so they feel confident and empowered.
